This Weekend: What's Happening in Washtenaw County

 There's something special about a Washtenaw County summer weekend — the kind where you can genuinely choose your own adventure, whether that means cheering on a cause, catching up with neighbors, or just finding a quiet bench near Top of the Park with a good book. This first weekend of August is no exception, and honestly, it's a nice reminder of why so many of my clients tell me they never want to leave this community, even when it's time to downsize.

Here's what's on the calendar for Saturday, August 1st and Sunday, August 2nd — and a few thoughts on who each event is really for.

🎖️ Washtenaw County Vet Fest — Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Washtenaw Community College

Now in its fifth year, Vet Fest brings together local veterans organizations for a day of free food, community, and — importantly — direct access to benefits and resource providers. It's organized through WCC's Wadhams Veterans Center, which has earned gold-level recognition from the state for its work supporting military-affiliated students and families.

Who it's for: Veterans, active-duty service members, and their families of every age. In my line of work, I see a lot of overlap between veterans' benefits questions and senior housing and estate planning questions, so if you or someone you love served, this is worth the trip even if you think you "already know" your benefits.

🏳️‍🌈 Ann Arbor Pride — Saturday, Downtown Ann Arbor

Always held the first Saturday in August, Ann Arbor Pride celebrates the city's long history of LGBTQ+ activism and community — a legacy that goes back to the 1970s. Expect a full day of celebration woven through downtown.

Who it's for: The LGBTQ+ community and allies of all ages, plus anyone who enjoys a genuinely warm, welcoming street festival atmosphere. Downtown will have energy to spare, so plan your parking accordingly if you're headed that direction for something else.

📚 Signing Day Saturday: Summer Edition — Saturday, 11 a.m., Schuler Books

A lower-key but lovely option if crowds aren't your thing: local authors will be at Schuler Books for a summer signing event.

Who it's for: Book lovers, families looking for an easy, air-conditioned outing, and anyone who wants to support local writers directly.

🎶 Top of the Park — Ongoing Through the Summer, Ingalls Mall

If you haven't made it to A2SF's free outdoor series yet this summer, this is a good weekend to remedy that. Between concerts, movies, wellness classes, and activities for kids, it's designed for exactly the kind of unhurried evening that makes summer in this town feel a little bit magic.

Who it's for: Truly everyone — families, retirees, empty nesters, college students home for the summer. It's one of the most age-diverse gatherings in the county, and one of the easiest to enjoy solo if you're newly on your own.

💛 Why This Matters Beyond "Just Fun"

When I work with folks who are weighing a move — whether that's downsizing from the family home, exploring senior living options, or helping aging parents figure out their next chapter — one of the first questions I ask is: what does community actually look like where you're headed?

Weekends like this one are a real answer to that question. Washtenaw County isn't just a place with good schools and a beautiful river; it's a place that shows up for its veterans, celebrates its full community, and keeps its calendar full of low-cost, high-connection ways to spend a Saturday. That matters just as much at 75 as it does at 25.
