🐭 Why Do I Have Mice in My House?

House mice (Mus musculus) are small rodents found in nearly every country worldwide. 🏡 Controlling rodent populations is crucial because they can damage food stores, eat crops, and spread parasites.

Mice are drawn to places with abundant food sources and cozy spots for nesting. 🧀 Even if your home is tidy, mice may still find their way in if they sense food or shelter. Common outdoor attractions include brush, trees, pet food, and bird feeders. Once they're in your yard, they’re more likely to enter your home in search of warmth, food, and safety.

Common Issues That Lead to Mice Indoors:

  • 🏚️ Damaged weather stripping

  • 🚰 Unsealed plumbing voids

  • 🚪 Entry points in garages or storage areas

  • 🪟 Gaps around doors, windows, or siding

  • 🐕‍🦺 Pet food or grains stored near doors

  • 🌬️ Open windows without screens

Think about your home—are there gaps where wind blows through? 🧐 Do all your windows have screens? Are there cracks in the foundation large enough for a mouse to squeeze through? A mouse can fit through openings as small as 6 to 7 mm, so inspect your home carefully.

How Do I get Rid of Mice? 🛑

If you find mice in your home, follow these three steps to help drive them out:

1. 🥫 Store Food Properly

Mice are always on the hunt for food! They love to find a stash in low kitchen cabinets or at the back of your pantry. They also sneak bites from pet food bowls left out in the open.

Store all food in sealed, airtight containers that are chew-proof. 🐾 This includes pet food! Be sure to wipe up crumbs, even inside cabinets, and sweep floors regularly. 🍽️

2. 🌳 Clean Up Your Yard

Keep brush, shrubs, and trees at least 12–18 inches away from your home. Mice and other pests seek out hidden spots, and eliminating these will reduce the chances of them coming near your house. 🏡

Cutting grass regularly and cleaning up pet waste also helps deter mice.

3. 🚪 Seal Exterior Entry Points

Mice can squeeze through tiny gaps as small as ¼ inch (about the width of a pencil). 🖊️ Check areas near windows, doors, plumbing voids, chimneys, and where the foundation meets the siding for possible openings.

Seal these gaps with steel wool, caulk, or cement to keep mice out. 🧱

🛠️ Stay Vigilant with Repairs

According to Jonathan Ferreira, ACE, Dallas-Fort Worth Branch Manager at Moxie Pest Control, “Mice can chew through anything. 🧀 Their teeth are constantly growing—they sharpen their teeth on metal, wood, and other surfaces.”

Outdoor maintenance is key to keeping rodents at bay. Regularly inspect your home for new entry points, as mice can chew through previous repairs. 🔧

❓ Is It Possible to Permanently Get Rid of Mice?

Despite your best efforts, it can be tough to get rid of mice permanently, especially if your neighbors have an infestation. 🏘️ Once mice find a place to call home, they leave behind urine and feces and spread pheromones, which attract other mice.

Being proactive and maintaining your home regularly will reduce the chances of a full-blown infestation!

By following these steps, you can reduce the chances of mice entering your home and keep your living space pest-free! 🏡✨

Adjustable-Rate Mortgages Make a Comeback in Today’s Market 📈🏠

As mortgage rates began to climb last week, some potential buyers started exploring alternative financing options—especially as their property choices increased and more sellers began offering concessions 🤝. In this evolving market, one type of mortgage is making a notable comeback: the adjustable-rate mortgage , or ARM . An ARM offers a lower initial interest rate compared to traditional fixed-rate mortgages, making it an attractive choice for buyers who want to keep their monthly payments more manageable in the short term 💵. This month, ARMs are especially popular among buyers of higher-priced homes who require larger loan amounts. In fact, nearly 10% of recent buyers have chosen an ARM —the highest rate since November 2023 🔄. Why Are Buyers Considering ARMs Now? 🤔 Lower Initial Payments – The "teaser" or introductory rate on an ARM can be significantly lower than current fixed mortgage rates, making monthly payments more affordable for the first few years 📉.
